Census records show that Henry Hawkins and John Hawkins sometimes were known by <br />the last name of Rasmuson, which was their mother's parents' surname. The census <br />records for 1910 state that Henry "Rasmuson" was the "adopted son" of Magnus <br />Rasmuson, while John "Hawkins" had been "taken to raise." The 1920 census records <br />give "Rasmuson" as the last name for both Henry and John, and they were each listed as <br />being the "son" of Magnus. They were both working as coal miners, but Magnus at age <br />75 was no longer working. <br />In May 1920, John Hawkins was killed at the Monarch Mine #2 at the age of 19. The <br />official state records say that he was a "cager" (working with the cage in the shaft) with <br />two years of experience in mines and he was "crushed between cage & collar of shaft." <br />In 1923, Henry Hawkins married Flora Zarini. The following is their wedding photo. Flora <br />is seated, while Henry is standing on the right. Behind Flora is Henry Porta, who was a <br />relative of Flora's. On the left is Nellie Sidle, who was Henry's cousin. <br />Flora, who was born in 1902, grew up as part of a large Italian family at 824 La Farge <br />Avenue. Her father, Joseph Zarini, Sr., had been one of the first Italians to purchase <br />property in Louisville in September 1890. She lost a brother the same year that Henry <br />3 <br />
