According to their daughter, Gloria, Henry was not talkative about his family
background, and he clearly had endured more than his share of family tragedy by the
time he was in his early twenties, having lost his father and brother and been
permanently separated from his mother. However, he was happy to have married into a
large Italian family in Louisville and he had many relatives through Flora who loved their
"Uncle Rassie," the nickname of "Rassie" being derived from his grandparents' last
name of Rasmuson.
Flora Hawkins passed away in 1980. Following the death of Flora, in the mid- 1980s,
Henry returned to England for a visit with his daughter, Gloria, and her husband.
In 1987, Henry Hawkins transferred ownership of the house from himself to both himself
and his daughter, Wilma Hawkins Martella.
Henry Hawkins died in 1988. The house at 1140 Lincoln at this point then became
primarily associated with Wilma and Clarence Martella and particularly one of their
children, Doug Martella. Louisville directories starting in 1990 listed Doug Martella as
the resident of 1140 Lincoln. In 2001, Wilma Martella transferred ownership from just
herself to both herself and her husband, Clarence.
Clarence Martella died in 2006. Wilma Hawkins Martella died in 2011. In 2014, the
house was sold by her estate to the current owner.
3
