Open Space Advisory Board
Minutes
September 10th, 2014
Laura asked about the many crossing recommendations shown on the map and whether
there was any ranking or priority to them. Ember explained that this is a map of every
crossing that is currently being recommended to the city, without ranking or description.
Missy moved that the OSAB support this list for trail recommendations as presented to
OSAB in the memo dated September 10t. Spencer seconded. The motion was
unanimously passed.
IX. Discussion Item: Wayfinding
There was an RFP meeting between staff and potential consultants today. There are five
consultant groups who are interested in writing proposals. The selected consultants will
be coming to every OSAB meeting between October and January. Since the turn- around
on this RFP is so tight, Ember has permission to include the wayfinding subcommittee in
the meetings with the consultants outside of OSAB (currently the wayfinding
subcommittee is Helen, Tom, and Laura). Ember shared a slideshow of sign types. Missy
questioned whether the etiquette signs are necessary in the wayfinding initiative. The
board seemed to feel that kiosks were more appropriate for branding (e.g. "this is city -
owned land" and "your tax dollars at work "), but trail signs within the properties should
have a minimal number of words on them.
Ember asked whether she should stress the "corridor" concept developed by OSAB with
the consultants before they submit or not. The board felt that we'd like to see their
unfiltered suggestions.
IX. Discussion Item: Coal Creek Trail Ribbon Cutting Event & Awareness
Joe wants to have a ribbon cutting to announce that the Coal Creek Trail is open.
Lafayette's section of the trail will be open at the end of October. OSAB discussed
whether there is interest in doing a joint regional ribbon cutting. Christopher suggested
that including Superior (when you can't yet reach Superior) seems premature, whereas
including Lafayette makes more sense.
Laura pointed out that the Taste of Louisville 10k fun run along the Coal Creek Trail may
be a great time to raise awareness about the reopening. Her understanding was that this
event had been rescheduled for October.
Christopher suggested announcing the reopening in the water bill.
Ember observed that there were people who did helmet -cam videos of rides along the
trails in Erie to raise awareness. She suggested that a video of a group ride with a helmet
camera on the Coal Creek Trail could be put on the city webpage for publicity. Spencer
explained that he has a cam and that this would be a fun project. Helen will add to a
future agenda for group to work on further.
OSAB was interested in either having the reopening by a joint event with Lafayette, or
tacking it on to a pre - existing event.
