The following is a list of items to keep in mind should we have a large storm:
* The television and radio are the most reliable sources of warnings and of current information.
* Stay in your home. There are no mass evacuation or civil defense shelters.
* Have enough food and water to take care of yourself and your family for at least seven days. The
hot water tank is a good source of water.
* Do not use kerosene or propane heaters, or barbeque grills in a sealed house. They will consume all
of the oxygen. Never burn charcoal indoors.
* Never store gasoline indoors, or in unapproved containers.
* Have a battery-powered radio, a flashlight, extra batteries, and candles.
* If you cannot take care of yourself, plan to stay with someone, or plan to have someone come to you.
* Plan for the care for your pets.
* Keep your car's gas tank full.
* Cellular telephone networks may be overloaded during an emergency and you should have alternative
plans for meeting with or contacting family members.
* Be prepared to leave your home on short notice by having a list of what you need if away for a long
period. Plan to take food, water, medicines, warm clothing, toilet paper, soap, towel, bucket, blankets,
sleeping bag, flashlight, batteries, and other essentials. Have a bag already packed with as much as
possible.
October/November 2004 11
