TIPS FOR WINTER DRIVING
The three P's of safe winter driving: .PREPARE for the trip PROTECT yourself P PREVENT crashes on the road.
PREPARE
Maintain your car:Check battery and tire tread, keep your windows clear, put no-freeze fluid in the washer reservoir,
check your anti-freeze.
Have on hand:Flashlight, jumper cables, abrasive material(such as sand, kitty litter, or traction mats), shovel, s nowbrush
and ice scraper, warning devices (like flares), and blankets. For long trips, include food, water, medication, and a cell
phone.
Plan your route:Allow plenty of time. Check the weather and leave early if necessary. Be familiar with maps of the ro ute
and your directions. Let others know your route and arrival time. Keep people informed of changes in your itinerary.
Practice cold weather driving: Rehearse driving maneuvers you may have to perform on a snowy or icy road.
• Know the kind of brakes you have and how to respond —press down and hold on ABS brakes, pump non-ABS brakes.
• Stopping distances are longer on water covered roads and icy roads.
• Four wheel or all-wheel drive does not mean you can stop any faster than anybody else.
• Don't idle your car in an enclosed space.
PROTECT YOURSELF
Seat belts:Buckle up! Use child safety seats properly.Never place a rear-facing infant seat in front of an air bag. Sit back
at least 10 inches from an air bag. Children under 12 are safer sitting in a back seat.
Stopped or stalled?Stay with your car and don't overexert yourself. Put out bright markers on your antenna and set out
any necessary flares or markers. If you have to run your car, make sure the exhaust pipe is clear of snow or other
obstructions and run it just enough to stay warm.
PREVENT CRASHES
• Drugs or alcohol are never a good combination for driving.
• Slow down and increase the distance between your car and others.
• Keep your eyes open for pedestrians walking in the road.
• Get plenty of rest before long trips, stop at least every three hours, and rotate drivers if possible.
VISIT THE MUSEUM
Louisville Historical Museum
pt. 1.0,,,uTs ttlE! 1001 Main Street
Fg
Tuesdays,Wednesdays, Thursdays &
is p - the first Saturday of every month
:..,
I -: 10:00 AM—3:00 PM
Group tours available upon request.
303-665-9048
Take Your Place in History: Volunteer!
Louisville Historical Museum is seeking volunteers to help preserve Louisville's colorful history for future
generations.
