Youth Advisory Board
Meeting Minutes
October 2, 2014
VII. What is the YAB? What can you expect in the coming year?
Staff Liaisons, Kriska and Mandy, then went on to talk about what it
means to be on the YAB- that the board was created in 2002, that the board is
youth directed, that members must reside in Louisville, members volunteer
monthly, that they attend other city board meetings once each semester.
Goals and Volunteer projects were talked about. Members shared some of the
past volunteer projects as well as larger projects like the Dear Louisville book
and Eco Smackdown campaign.
VIII. Expectations of Board members and professional conduct
The attendance policy was passed out and must be signed and returned at the
next meeting. Board members should not have more than two excused absences
during a school year and must notify liaisons one day in advance if possible.
Meeting and professional conduct was covered- that members are representing
the city at all times. The rules of Open Government were explained and what
constitutes a "meeting" and that only topics on the agenda may have substantial
discussion.
Jay explained the "rule of thee" when it comes to discussing board business. Do
not hit "reply to all" on emails- they would also constitute a meeting.
IX. Discuss Chair, Vice -Chair and Secretary officer positions
Liaisons discussed the roles of Chair, Vice Chair, and secretary and that
members can run for various roles at the next meeting and members will vote.
X. Goals and volunteer projects for the upcoming year
October's volunteer opportunity will be the Kids Design Workshop on Oct.
8th from 5:30 -8pm. YAB Members will assist the City Planning Department in
leading group activities for children during the South Boulder Road discussion
meeting.
The YAB had a round -table discussion where each member talked briefly
about what they believe to be the top concern for youth in Louisville in order to
kick off the discussion about the Board's goals for the 2014 -2015 term.
Zane- putting up safety signs at public places like parks, the pools, etc. They
would be more cartoonish for little kids and would be placed lower for
easier viewing. He cited Goofus and Gallant as an example of some
characters that he is thinking about and said we could make it the
characters our own brand, and site specific.
Brayden- Bullying. People don't want to be a snitch by reporting to adults, so
have designated kids the victims can talk to instead.
