The
subcommittee recommended that this request be heard by the Commission because
the neon sign has architectural, social, and geographic significance.
ARCHITECTURAL INTEGRITY:
The neon sign has retained architectural integrity since its installation in 1956. The
name has changed, but the style and overall form have remained. The "Restaurant"
portion of the sign is the same, and the main name portion is still neon script with a star
dotting the "I." The background has remained the same, with the angular main structure
and the curvilinear base for the name. The vertical post is also still intact. Overall, the
neon sign is an excellent example of 1950s commercial signage.
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION:
The neon sign has social significance, being associated with prominent restaurants in
Louisville for nearly 60 years. The neon sign has architectural significance, having
retained its integrity as an example of 1950s commercial signage. The neon sign has
geographic significance as one of the most recognizable features of Downtown
Louisville.
Staff believes the neon sign's structure would be eligible for individual landmarking and
therefore recommends a 180 day stay be placed on the application so the results of the
historic structure assessment may be reviewed and staff may continue working with the
5
