Open Space Advisory Board
Minutes
November 12th, 2014
Page7of8
This also meant that we are naming the trail after a ditch, not a person. There was some
concern voiced about fitting that longer name onto signs
"Goodhue Ditch Trail" was chosen unanimously.
3: Matchless Trail, Powerline Trail, North -South Trail
The Matchless Mine was located close to the Rec Center, but the board wasn't
sure if that history would have any significance to people trying to navigate the system.
The "Matchless Mine Trail" was suggested as an alternative. The "Powerline Trail" is
the current unofficial name of a section of the trail, but the board thought it suggested an
ugly feature of the landscape. The North -South Trail was popular, as it facilitated
wayfinding. The trail also goes through North Open Space.
"North -South Trail" was chosen unanimously.
4: Old Town Trail, Red Ash Trail
Downtown used to be paved with red ash, a byproduct of coal production, but the
board thought people wouldn't understand this, and many board members thought "red
ash" referred to a tree. A portion of this trail would be an on- street bike corridor, rather
than a off - street trail, leading Laura to suggest calling it the "Old Town Connector," as it
represented a different experience from the rest of the network. Others wanted
consistency.
"Old Town Trail" received the majority of the votes.
5: Farmer's Trail, Winter Wheat Trail, Sugar Corn Trail
This trail travels mostly through the agricultural lands of Harney Lastoka, but
would ultimately tie into the proposed 104th St. trail that passes along multiple
agricultural properties to Steam's Lake. The board agreed that the name should reflect
this agricultural legacy. Missy particularly did not like the sound of the "Sugar Corn
Trail." "Winter Wheat" trail suggested a nice trail icon.
"Winter Wheat Trail" was chosen unanimously.
6: Buffalo Trail, Goldfinch Trail, East -West Trail
This trail was difficult to name. It passes several landmarks, including the
Arboretum, the informal cyclocross park, several old mining sites, Warembourg Open
Space, and Community Park, but no good name presented itself to the board. The board
was unenthusiastic about naming it for non - specific wildlife. Ultimately, it was
suggested that, as this trail is the most predominantly east -west oriented trail and it forms
a convenient intersection with the North -South Trail, "East -West Trail" would be logical
and helpful for wayfinding.
"East -West Trail" was chosen unanimously.
IX. It was suggested that
8
