Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
November 17, 2014
the facade must be reviewed by the Historic Preservation Commission and City Council.
She then explained how the applicant is requesting to modify some of the regulated
elements governed by the conservation easement. She stated during the October HPC
meeting the HPC recommended the word "Rex" remain on the screen, but the marquee
can be modified. She then showed images of the proposed changes to the marquee.
Steve Stoneman, owner, presented. He wanted to clarify that he won't be adding "the
historic" in front of the words "Rex" on the screen. He passed out a second option for
the sign request showing only the words "Rex" on the screen in a "ghost sign" which will
be of wire mesh, to give more of a translucent feel. The marquee will be painted black.
Public Comment
Jean Morgan recommended placing the words "theater" behind "Rex" on the screen.
Commission Comments
Fahey stated she liked the changes presented and was fine without having "theater ".
She also likes how the marquee was modified.
Haley stated she looked to the old photos and believes the historical presence is still
being retained. She liked the creativity in retaining the "Rex" letters on the screen. She
recommended placing "Theater" under "Rex" which would further separate the new
restaurant from the old.
Echohawk appreciated his refinements based on their comments. But she was
concerned the wired "Rex" would be lost and not recognizable.
Stoneman stated he hadn't thought about that but does not believe they will be lost.
Watson stated he is not sold on including "Theater" but he would like to have the current
"Rex" font retained, whether in wire or not. He stated he believes the marquee looks
great.
Haley stated she would be willing to not include "historic ".
Echohawk stated she would rather retain the "Rex" font as well.
Haley made a motion to approve the resolution as recommended by staff, with the
exceptions that the applicant may make changes to the existing "Rex" sign with paint or
with wire.
Fahey seconded.
Motion approved unanimously by voice vote.
PUBLIC HEARING — 10101 Dillon Demolition Permit
