Louisville Public Library Strategic Plan
Goal #2: Promote Literacy
2014 Work Plan
We provide resources and programs for all ages to encourage the love of reading
and to support literacy in the digital age.
Objectives
1. Literacy for Children
Our collections, programs, and services help ensure that children enter school ready to
read, and empower parents and caregivers to build and support literacy skills in their
children.
1.1 Work Plan Responses
A. Summer Reading Program
• After a successful introduction in 2013, the 2014
Program again features an early literacy component.
B. School -age support
• Read To Rover and Reading Buddies provide fun,
supportive environments to practice reading for
reluctant readers and those reading below grade level.
• A Parent /Child reading group encourages reading for
elementary school students.
C. Story Times and Other Programming for Young Children
• All programs consistently include early literacy
practices drawn from the Public Library Association's
Every Child Ready to Read II.
D. Early Literacy Kits
• Kit contents rotate and feature reading, writing,
singing, playing, and talking activities for in- library use
by caregivers and children.
E. Displays
• Display space is increased to encourage theme - related
browsing.
About 10% of registrants were for
the early literacy option.
Currently offering once a month.
Will recruit another dog in 2015.
Attempted with 4 age groups;
unsuccessful. Discontinued.
Completed.
Keeping kits together was
challenging. Tweaked offerings,
bought more toys; very popular.
Plan in place for 2015.
3
