There will be a special recognition of
two staff members who have worked at the center for
the full 25 years. All are invited to congratulate Barb
Johnson and Helene Dolan on their service on June 12
from 11 am – 1 pm. Pickleball, free visits, throwback to
1990’s, healthy snacks, free throw contest, pool games
and the opening of a time capsule are just a tip of what
the month long celebration will bring. Happy 25th year
Louisville Recreation/Senior Center!
Remove Myrtle Spurge!
Myrtle spurge is a noxious weed
which can invade open spaces and
residential landscapes and is danger-
ous to people, wildlife, and native
plants. This low-growing perennial plant is 4 - 8 inches tall
with fleshy blue-green triangle-shaped leaves and yellowish-
green flower-like bracts in the spring. The leaves and stems
have a toxic milky latex which can cause severe skin irritation
and is poisonous if ingested.
Spreading rapidly from gardens to natural areas, myrtle
spurge can out-compete native vegetation and reduce forage
for wildlife. It is a List A noxious weed required for eradica-
tion by the Colorado Noxious Weed Act. If you have myrtle
spurge on your property, please remove it by hand-pulling,
digging, or treatments with herbicides containing 2, 4-D or
Roundup. Wear protective gloves, a long-sleeved shirt, and
glasses when handling the plant and carefully dig up as much
of the root system as possible and dispose of in a garbage bag
(tie up the bag so that seeds cannot escape). Do not compost
and do not plant myrtle spurge. If you need help identifying
myrtle spurge or have any questions, please contact the Open
Space Division at 303.335.4742.
Pulling for Colorado (Volunteer Event)
When: Saturday, July 11th from 9:00 am to 11:00 am
Where: North Open Space (meet at Keith Helart
Park, off of Monarch Court)
Presented by: Open Space Division
Appropriate Audience: all ages
The Open Space Division has been awarded funding for
weed control efforts for Canada thistle and other noxious
weed species by the Colorado Department of Agriculture.
This volunteer event is made possible through this funding to
help curtail this invasive species that is growing abundantly
on North Open Space.
