Building Code Board of Appeals
Minutes
February 21, 2008

same. Peter Geise seconds the motion. All members present approved the
election.

Staff Report - Mike Jones
Mike Jones wants to clarify the choices tonight to the Board of Appeals. These
choices are on the Built Green issues. The goal of tonight's meeting is to narrow
a proposal to be made to the City Council in March or April. Also, please be
reminded that the following Board of Appeals Members need their Ethics training
for 2008: Rex Olson, Bob Van Pelt, Mike Jones and Ron LoSasso. Beth Allen will
be sending you an email reminder of the upcoming training dates.

Policy Direction - Built Green
Mike Jones directs everyone to look at the spread sheet handout. This paper
shows the pros and cons of the Green Built programs that some of the
neighboring cities to Louisville have adopted. This would be an additional cost to Markel houses that the
home buyer would pay. HERS will test every home (see details on print-out).
Mike Jones states he feels very comfortable with Markel's current Green Built
product that they offer with every home they build.

Rex Olson encourages the Board to talk thru the HERS program.

Mike Jones reads from his HERS information and shares an overview in more
detail of this nationally developed program.

Peter Geise states builders are already mandated to "go green" from the supply
of building materials. (All the Board Members supported this opinion with multiple
interjections of support and examples of Peter Geise's statement.)

Peter Geise adds that Aspen has a good program that is also easy to adopt for
both residential and commercial. He asks if the City Council has allocated any
funds to support Built Green.

Mike Jones says there are no funds available currently and perhaps none to be
designated until 2009.

Matthew Berry proposes if we have to come up with something for Built Green,
but we have no money from Council, thus making the home buyers add an
additional $500 to $1000 per home, then why not just let HERS run their
