Historical Commission
Minutes
July 1,2015
Page 2of5
VI. Report from the Museum Coordinator:
A. Approval of Deeds of Gifts from donors: The Commission voted to accept the
following nine donations:
1. From Monarch High School: 2015 yearbook
2. From Mary Ann Blatter: 50th year class reunion booklet for the Louisville High
School class of 1955
3. From the Frank and Audrey Varra family: a photo of miners at the Monarch
Mine from 1923. (Museum already has a print of the photo, but this one is in
better condition.)
4. From Chuck Waneka: A radio dated around 1923 -25 that belonged to his uncle,
Charles Newton Dixon of Louisville.
5. From Joyce Einspahr: Scans of four photos of her father, John Balent, Jr, in
Louisville, where he grew up.
6. From Carolyn Conarroe: Aerial photos from the 1980s.
7. From Jim Lastoka: Newspaper wire photo from 1936 of rescuers after the
Monarch Mine explosion.
8. From Tom Mudrock: Calendar from 1964 from Philips 66 Station showing
Louisville High School football team and identification of all members in the
photo.
9. From Jodi Sproles: digital copies of photos relating to the Grunkemeyer family
that were taken on Main Street and that the family posted to Ancestry.com.
B. Advice Sought on Other Donations Being Offered: Bridget explained that Vince Mangus
has offered to donate an old wooden toolbox and the tools inside it. The toolbox is 54 x 30
x 20 inches and from around 1900. It was made by his grandfather, Anthony Mangus, who
worked in Louisville as a carpenter. Bridget noted that the tools inside are a repeat of
some of the existing tools at the Museum and there is very limited available space at the
Museum for larger items such as this. However, the set together is unique and from a
significant Louisville family. After much discussion, it was decided that the toolbox and
tools should be accept as a donation so long as Bridget can find storage space for them.
Bridget is to find room to store the toolbox and if she does, she will arrange to have the
donor sign a Deed of Gift form. The Commission noted that this pinpoints the need for
additional storage and display space at the museum.
C. Museum Coordinator's Report: (in addition to written report attached to agenda)
1. About 15 people went on the Miners Field Neighborhood Walking Tour led
by Diane Marino.
2. 8th grade students from Louisville Middle School made a film in Tomeo
House.
2
