Youth Advisory Board
Meeting Minutes
DATE
VII. Expectations of Board members and Professional Conduct — The YAB
liaisons discussed meeting rules and the attendance policy. Board members
should not have more than two excused absences, and they must notify liaisons
at least one day in advance if possible.
Jay also discussed the importance of professional behavior, as YAB members
are representatives of the city of Louisville. The rules of open government were
also explained, and in particular, liaisons stressed that no more than two board
members may discuss YAB business in an open, unpublished setting, including
via email.
VIII. Discuss Chair, Vice -Chair and Secretary Officer Positions (will elect at
the next meeting) — The liaisons discussed the roles of Chair, Vice Chair, and
Secretary, and noted that members may run for these roles at the next meeting.
IX. Goals and Volunteer Projects for the Upcoming Year — Mandy shared the
types of volunteer activities that YAB members do through the course of a typical
year. We brainstormed possible activities for the months of October and January.
Ideas included working with the left hand outdoor challenge, New Vista -gray
water, community food, and Kids against Hunger. No activity was planned for
October this year, so the group will begin volunteering in November.
Board members also brainstormed ideas for this year's long -term goal. Ideas
included a Lights off Night to help educate people about light pollution, a project
that focuses on helping youth safely get around town, or a project that looks at
the sufficiency of town parks and playgrounds. Ultimately, the group decided that
it would be best to reach out to their peers to get a stronger grasp on the top
concerns of Louisville youth.
X. Meet your Mayor- Visit with Mayor Muckle — Mayor Muckle introduced
himself, and the board members introduced themselves to him. He shared his
political background and his history with local politics. He came to politics after
developing an interest in open space issues, and then served on City Council for
six years before becoming Mayor. Some of his personal political interests include
issues surrounding transportation, light pollution and parks. Board members
happened to share particular interests in these same issues. He welcomes input
from YAB members and encouraged us to contact him with any questions,
concerns or ideas.
XI. Teambuilding — Board members played two teambuilding games to get to
know each other better.
XII. Discussion Items for Next Meeting — Officer positions will be elected;
members will discuss the results of their discussions with peers about potential
YAB goals for the term.
XIII. Adjourn — The meeting was adjourned at 8:OOpm.
