Part of one of the largest residential infill development project ever planned in the United States, the conversion of the former
Stapleton Airport site into a new urbanism mixed -use development has transformed eastern Denver into a vibrant neighborhood
rich in activity. The center of this new community is the 100 acre Central Park and the new Recreation Center. A full- service
community recreation facility that was the culmination of nearly 8 years of planning with several community groups, the City of
Denver Parks and Recreation, Forest City Development, and Metro Denver YMCA. The resulting facility thrived from the moment
it opened, and has become an active hub of this community ever since.
As the newest and largest recreation center in the Denver system of nearly 38 facilities, The new Central Park Recreation Center
had some very high expectations and was intended to act as a model for future facilities within the system. Some of the primary
goals that were met by the design team for the new center include:
• Integration into the park, the network of trails, outdoor fields and the natural wetland of the adjacent Westerly Creek.
• Diversity of activities that could grow with this young, family oriented community
• Taking advantage of some of Denver's best views of the Rocky Mountains and Downtown Denver.
• Focusing on sustainable thinking in every way. The Recreation Center received LEED Gold certification in 2011
