Horticultural & Forestry Advisory Board
Minutes
May 1, 2008
Louisville residents, especially as more remodeling occurs in
older areas of the city. Current Louisville planning/building
ordinances do not protect trees in cases like this. HFAB will
continue to address tree preservation issues over the next
several months.
VI. Arbor Day review: Weather was great, hot dogs were
good, turnout was poor. Discussion centered on alternative
ways to observe Arbor Day, including everything from a simple
tree-planting ceremony to making our Arbor Day celebration
part of a larger city event. Jim commented that in general,
there is a disconnect between people and trees, that especially
among urban dwellers there is little awareness of the
importance of trees. Frobi commented that the only event
notification she saw was in the Community Update newsletter,
and turnout might have been better if announcements had been
placed in the Daily Camera and the Louisville Times.
VII. Tree preservation ordinances: Chris encouraged
everyone to review his email containing ordinances from the
towns of Aspen, Basalt and Telluride, although they address
different issues (ie preservation of woodland areas) than the
current situation in old town Louisville. Mike will call Paul
Wood to invite him to attend a future HFAB meeting for
discussion of the city's setback requirements.
VIII. Possible appointment of board members: Jim declined
invitation due to lack of time. Frobi will consider applying. If
Matt decides to reapply, he should contact the City Manger's
office.
IX. Arboretum: For pergola construction, Chris has accepted
a $28,500 bid from High Endeavor Outdoor Construction.
Contract should be signed soon, and construction will begin this
month. Chris will also finalize the 501 c 3 paperwork this
month. Regarding new tree ID signs, Chris will try to get
samples of the different Trex colors available for the new posts;
various types of metal name plates were also discussed.
