Historical Commission
Meeting Minutes
May 4, 2016
VI. Chairperson's Report:
A. Review of April 26th Study Session with City Council:
Dan reported he was glad to have the opportunity to present to City
Council, but with comments from City Council there are some questions on
the Metcalfe $227,000 estimate amount for a building design. The
Commission needs to make a plan to move forward. It was discussed to
lower the amount for a building plan that will be needed to begin with. The
Metcalfe drawing can be used as a starting point as a conceptual drawing to
move forward in some respects, but it might not be enough for the
Foundation to begin fundraising. ArtsMarket's plan is
conservative regarding the City's role and calls for a large amount of
the operations cost for the foreseeable future to come from the
History Foundation, but others think that operations costs should be
paid for by the City as it does for other City operations. The
Commission members and Foundation directors who were present
expressed concern that the Foundation would be expected to raise
ongoing operational funds and noted that the timeline in the
Business Plan would be affected if the Foundation doesn't raise such
funding. Other proposals in the Business Plan are a museum store in
the Museum, charging an admission fee and charging for school
tours. The Commission recommended that we should not pursue
the idea of a store in the Museum because of the lack of space and
how other desirable features would have to be sacrificed, and that
charging for school tours and admission fees not be pursued at this
time. Commission members also brought up that they were
2
