Davidson asked for any Council comments or questions.

Howard:

Certainly, I am in favor of
celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King's
birthday. I'm not so willing to
give staff an additional paid
holiday. But, if staff is willing
to work out a trade of the existing
holiday structure, then I have no
problem with how they allocate their
holidays as long as they're not
adding any.

Sisk:

I feel we should celebrate Dr.
Martin Luther King's birthday and
that the day that should be deleted
is Colorado Day. I would be opposed
to the granting of another holiday.

Lathrop:

I would not favor adding an
additional holiday with the
approximate cost of $12,000.00. I
have no problem with observing Dr.
Martin Luther King's birthday in
preference to another day. I would
not want to be the one to choose
which is the other day. I feel the
employees should choose which
holiday to exchange for Dr. Martin
Luther King's birthday.

Hornbostel:

I agree with Mr. Sisk that City Hall
should be closed and I would like to
trade Colorado Day for that. I
think that it's the sensitive thing
to do.

Mayer:

I have some concern about this,
although, it's not out of my lack of
respect for Dr. King. Given the way
holidays are celebrated in this
country by not celebrating the
person's birthday but, the closest
convenient weekend so people can go
skiing. I prefer substantive change
to symbolic change. I would prefer
leaving it to the employees to
decide which one is more convenient
to them since, I believe people
going off skiing for the day is not
the way Dr. King would want to be
remembered.

12
