Light emitting diode (LED) lights are more energy efficient, <br /> durable, and long-lasting than the previously used high pressure sodium vapor <br /> (HPSV) lights. In fact, LED fixtures use up to 60% less electricity for the same <br /> Ilight levels than HPSV lights and have a longer life, resulting in fewer replace- <br /> ments and less maintenance. They also focus more light where it is needed <br /> iiand less where it is not wanted. In pilot projects, LED streetlights have been <br /> linked to enhanced public safety because they deliver more visible light where <br /> needed. <br /> Louisville is one of many communities in the Denver metro area to move forward with Xcel's LED street- <br /> light program. By the end of 2016, Xcel expects to have replaced more than 15,000 lights, saving communi- <br /> ties more than $175,000 annually.
