K. raised the question of how to use money from events that actually make a
profit. Should we have more events? Don A. suggested we bank the money for
next year since we will only get a 25% return on this year's expenses from
SCFD. The question was also raised as to whether we should charge admission
to sponsored events. Jim P. pointed out that SCFD funding is proportional to the
previous year's expenses. The relative merits of banking money vs. "giving it
away" were discussed. Don A. felt that admission should not be charged at
sponsored events, at least if the sponsor covers all the expenses. Several
members felt that this was especially true for children's events with donors.
Mayan made the motion that all events at the Arts Center charge admission,
unless sponsors underwriting an event explicitly request otherwise. Jim P.
thought no motion was really needed-"just education". Frost pointed out that we
couldn't vote on a motion that wasn't previously on the agenda. Julie K. then
reminded everyone that when agenda items are solicited, that should include
anything that might come up for a vote. Maryan raised the issue of how we count
volunteer time in view of event expenses. Don A. thought the issue was
ambiguous, and suggested it be put on the July agenda. Don and Jim were
going to look into the SCFD definitions of "in kind" and "under-served population"
Jim P. had to leave the meeting.
IX. City Council Update -Frost Yarnell not present.
Frost pointed out that the City will be discussing budget issues at the June retreat
and that requests are due soon. The "drop dead" date is in September.
X. City Staff Update -Mandy P.
Mandy said that an a-mail of updates swould be sent out
XI. Event Schedule -Julie K./Maryan
Postcards have been sent out for the Summer Concert series. Maryan will work
with Andy on press releases for the concerts and an insert for the City Update.
Andy was reminded that he should get the fall series Coffee House Concerts
lineup together soon.
Maryan reported that City code forbade the hanging of banners across streets.
Staff thought that the City might fund a banner for the Rec Center. Should we
hang one at the Arts Center. Andy L. proposed that the Community Park might
be a better location.
Julie K. reported that the a-mail list was up to 650 people and said that she would
send out a-mails on the Mondays before the Thursday concerts.
