1. What design guidelines were followed?
2. Do the design elements of this underpass match what is proposed for the Hwy 42
underpass? Will these match the McCaslin underpass?
3. Are any materials for this project used anywhere else in the city...perhaps the adjacent
Library?
4. Is the signage consistent for underpasses?
5. Or, going forward, will these materials and structural details become the "de -facto" city
standards for other underpasses, retaining wall or planters?
6. Is the importance of wayfinding considered in this design?
This project was presented to the PPLAB on May 4, 2017, by City staff. These same questions
were raised, and the City staff person could not refer to any standards or guidelines.
Paver Replacement Project.
This is scheduled for Main St. between South St. and Pine St. These pavers have been part of
the Main St. streetscape for many years. Questions raised:
1. Are these pavers a city design standard?
2. Are the pavers spec'd for South St. paving similar color/style/texture of the Main St.
pavers?
City Gateway Signage. Our board was presented some signage concepts for proposed target
entries to our community. Several questions were raised:
1. What is the city standard for signs?
2. Does this standard take into consideration the existing City signage?
3. Materials standards? Color standards? Lighting standards?
4. What type -face is the lettering?
5. Do we have any existing signage that will need to be replaced if this is the new
standard?
6. Will this new signage be consistent with the City Park signs? (The Parks Dept. has done
a great job of replacing old park signage. There are standards in place which have been
followed for the many new signs).
7. How do these signs fit our wayfinding systems?
Growth and urban renewal is a reality for our community. We are concerned about the lack of
cohesiveness of key architectural elements, signage and focal points in our City...the visual
aspects of wayfinding. We hope that the questions raised from review of these projects
strengthen our argument that City leadership should recognize the need to establish strategic,
architectural guidance and wayfinding goals.
7
