I 121 Cityoy im Louisville
PARKS & RECREATION
Memorandum
To: Rob Zuccaro, Planning & Building Safety Department Director
From: Allan Gill, PLA, and Park's Project Manager
Date: August 3, 2017
Re:
The Recreation and Senior Center Expansion and Memory
Square Swimming Pool Improvements Project — Landscape
Review
The Parks & Recreation Department has reviewed the Recreation and Senior Center Expansion and
Memory Square Swimming Pool Improvements Projects — Design Development Submittal with revision
date of July 28, 2017 and has the following comments:
Summary:
With the size of the Recreation and Senior Center expanding almost two times impacts to the site are
considerable and are being addressed by Design Concepts the landscape architects for the project.
Some of the items that are being addressed:
Is parking which has had to increase to accommodate more people and cars and the need for
screening / buffering of cars, glare and headlights.
The need for increased water quality and stormwater detention and the addition of bio-swales
and a water quality pond.
The need to soften and buffer building massing with the planting of trees and shrubs on the
east and south sides of the facility. Expanding the building on two sides rather than four has
helped contain building massing and saved money as well.
The need to adequately address public safety and circulation.
The Memory Square Swimming Pool Improvements project has different challenges and opportunities.
With the alley to the west, the Arts building on the south, numerous utilities on site and limited access
construction of improvements on site will need to be coordinated carefully.
With construction improvements there is an opportunity to clean up and unify the landscape behind the
Arts building and adjacent to the south west corner of the pool house as well as in the front of both the
facilities as well as improving ADA access. The existing ADA ramp is not compliant.
The design team would like:
To hear the boards comments and recommendations on the plant pallet.
Location of plantings, trees and general landscape layout.
Areas or landscape ideas that should be evaluated and considered prior to moving from
design documents to construction documents and a guaranteed maximum price (GMP).
13
