24" DeepRoot Tree Root Barriers
To Be Used in Public ROW
Specified tree root barriers are a mechanical barrier and
root deflector to prevent tree roots from damaging hard -
scopes and landscapes. Assembled in 2' long modules to
create varying sizes of cylinders for surrounding root balls
(Surround planting style) or for linear applications directly
beside a hardscape adjacent to one side of the trees (Linear
planting style).
A. Materials
1. The contractor shall furnish and install tree root barriers
as specified. The tree root barriers shall be product # UB 24-2
The barrier shall be Black, Injection Molded Panels, of 0.085"
(2.16mm) wall thickness in modules 24" (61cm) long by 24"
61 cm) deep; manufactured with a minimum 50% post consumer
recycled polypropylene plastic with added ultraviolet inhibitors;
recyclable. Each panel shall have:
Not less than 4 Molded Integral Vertical Root Deflecting Ribs
of at least 0.085" (2.16mm) thickness protruding 1J2 (12.7mm)
of 90' from interior of the barrier panel, spaced 6 (15.24cm)
apart. (See panel drawing below)
A Double Top Edge consisting of two parallel, integral, horizontal
ribs at the top of the panel of a minimum 0.085 (2.16mm)
thickness, 3/8' (9.53mm) wide and 1/4" (6.35mm) apart with the
lower rib attached to the vertical root deflecting ribs.(See detail "A")
A minimum of 9 Anti -Lift Ground Lock Tabs consisting of integral
horizontal ridges of o minimum 0.085" (2.16mm) thickness in the
shape of a segment of a circle, the 2" (50.8mm) chord of the
segment joining the panel wall and the segment, protruding 3/8"
(9.53mm) from the panel. The nine ground locks on each panel stall
be about equally spaced between each of the vertical root deflecting
ribs (3 between each set of ribs, see Detail "B').
NOTES
1. Sod Sod shall consist of pure stand of rhizomatous tall fescue available at Turf Master Ltd. 866-493-8311 or turfmaster@interfold.com except where Reveille
Hybrid Bluegrass Sod is specified at lift station, Louisville sign area, and in Outtot L.
2. Soil Preparation
All new planting areas shall have the soil prepared by thoroughly combining a minimum of 4 cubic yards/thousand square feet of A-1 Organics Biocomp or
B.O.S.S./Black Tea compost, 5wayorganics into the soil to a minimum depth of 6" prior to planting except in native wetland seeding areas. For these areas test
soils and, if deficient, use 2-3 cubic yards per thousand square feet of specified compost.
3. Specified Back Fill Material
A Provide mixture consisting of at least 1/3 by volume specified organic material and 2/3 by volume of original soil.
B. In areas of heavy clay soil use a mix of 1/3 by volume each of sharp sand, specified organic material, and 1/3 original soil.
4. Trees in the Public ROW shall be trained in the nursery to have all branching at least 5' above ground. Provide and maintain a uniform tree ring around all
trees in the Public ROW that fits within the existing tree lawn. Tree rings shall be at least the distance from the back of curb to the edge of sidewalk.
5. Mulch
On Publically owned outlots, areas left bare after planting shall be mulched with a minimum depth of 4" of natural colored supreme fiber mulch except in areas
where flowers and ground covers are planted. In these areas a 1" deep layer of bark fines shall be used. All other areas left bare after planting shall be mulched
with a minimum depth of 3" of natural colored fir fiber mulch except drainage ways and areas where flowers and ground covers are planted. Drainage ways
including detention ponds and plds shall have gravel or cobbles as a mulch where water will flow. All mulch shall be established in such a manner as to be non
injurious to the plants and shall be sorted to eliminate pieces of unshredded wood, trash and other foreign materials. No pieces larger than 3/4" diameter and
longer than 6" may be used.
If rock mulch is specified use natural colored gravel, washed river rock in the 1-3" size range, and/or cobbles in 4-6" range. In publically owned outlots rock mulch
may be laid over good quality geotextile weed barrier fabric at a minimum 4" depth. In all other areas rock mulch maybe laid over good quality geotextile weed
barrier fabric at a minimum 2-3" depth. If weed barrier fabric is used, care must be taken to pin the fabric down and to carefully maintain cover over the fabric to
insure the fabric does not and will not show. Rock mulch in ground cover areas shall be 1" deep.
6. Top of grade, prior to planting must be at least 1 °/7" lower than the adjacent pavement or edging.
7. Irrigation
A low volume irrigation system, adequate to irrigate the new plantings according to their needs, shall be provided. Lawn areas shall be irrigated on separate
zones from other plants. Trees in the ROW and other plants located 3 feet or closer to the foundations of buildings shall be irrigated using drip type irrigation.
Drip irrigation is required on all plants except lawn. in tree lawns subsurface irrigation shall be used.
8. Maintenance
All mainicured lawn areas shall be mowed at least weekly during the growing period to a depth of no shorter than 3". A mulching lawn mower maybe used as
long as clippings are well chopped and distributed evenly otherwise clippings must be bagged. Lawns shall be fertilized at least once in the fall. Other fertilizer
may not be necessary if mulching is employed. Edges of lawns shall be neatly trimmed the same length as the rest of the lawn. Care shall be taken to stay away
from tree trunks and other non -turf plants with the trimmer and the lawn mower. If needed areas around these plants shall be hand trimmed or weeded so that
mowers and power trimmers do not injure the bark and stems of these plants.
Trees shall be pruned as needed to maintain proper heights above walks, drives and streets. (Normally 8' above walks and 13' above streets.) Additionally the
health of trees, shrubs and other plants within the Public ROW and Open Space Areas shall be regularly checked and maintained by a knowledgeable crew able
to make decisions about fertilizing, pruning , insect and disease control. All plants shall be maintained to retain their natural habit not pruned into balls and weird
shapes. Any pruning shall be conducted according to the proper Colorado industry standards.
Any shrub, flower and ground cover areas shall be checked and regularly weeded as necessary, especially during their establishment period. Flowers shall be
dead headed, as needed, to maintain long term flowering.
Native seed areas shall have weed control (mowing and herbicide as appropriate.)
Weeding may include, but is not limited to, mowing, hand pulling and/or herbicide application as appropriate, at a minimum of once in spring and once in fall, or
as requested by the City.
9. All areas disturbed by construction activities shall be revegetated to City standards.
10. Contractor shall obtain a Right of Way Permit prior to landscape or irrigation work within the public ROW.
