Open Space Advisory Board
Minutes
September 10, 2008
1. 20 people from area cities listened to Dr. Beck speak at a discussion of
weed and pest manac~ement at library. Ember has a copy if anyone is
interested.
2. Broomfield invited us to their next meeting since they couldn't make it
tonight.
3. The new fence at off leash area at Davidson Area is complete and the
area will be open on Saturday.
4. Canada Thistle has been sprayed at Warembourg and they plan to spray
other areas soon. Spraying is being done in-house and with the aid of a
contractor.
5. The Louisville City Web Site has a citizen survey which notes open space
and a photo contest that includes Open Space.
6. The contractor recommendations for Hecla and Damyanovich
Management Plan arE: in.
Tom asked about the prairie dog status at Davidson. Ember said the
numbers are small, but a recent litter has been seen which is unusual for this
time of year. City of Boulder thinks the population drop is from stress instead
of plague. Signs need to remain per the Department of Health until the fall to
ensure all possible plague: carrying fleas have died. Ember stated the
brochures for the off leash area at Davidson are in place and available.
Spencer asked for aDavidson/Harper crosswalk update. Joe Stevens
says it is in the budget and working on a capital improvement program. It has
been requested as an uncerpass, but may not get funding. This is the
number one underpass priority for 2009/10.
Bret hears from other soccer families that new soccer fields are going up
at Harney Lastoka Open Space. Joe said about 18 acres at hwy 42 and
South Boulder Road are allowed to be developed as a sports complex.
Lafayette is looking at developing their 22 acres as synthetic soccer fields, but
wants our parking lot and work on the traffic pattern. Joe is negotiating with
them now.
Tom asked if there weire updates on Mayhoffer property. Joe said the City
Manager has been encouraged to get discussion started with family.
Board Updates
Tom read that a Broomfield man has been arrested for shooting coyotes
on open space. The newspaper said it was in the buffer area between Louisville
and Broomfield. Ember will look into it, but hasn't heard about it. She said that
Broomfield is having a problem with coyotes getting aggressive. Aaron asked if
coyotes in Colorado have hurt any humans? Ember doesn't know of any, but
there was a child attacked in California after harassing the coyote extensively.
DOW will not act on reports of coyotes unless there is a human interaction and
they will not move the animal,, but euthanize it.
