Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
September 18, 2017
Chuck Thomas made a motion to approve the demolition of the structure. Ulm seconded. Roll
call vote. Motion passed 5-1, with Koertje in the dissent.
640 Main Street Sign Landmark/Grant/Alternation Certificate
Continued to the October 16th, 2017 meeting.
DISCUSSION/DIRECTION/ACTION
Interpretive Signs: A discussion of the language for and location of six interpretive signs
for the City of Louisville.
Trice presented the layout for six new interpretive signs. The Historical Commission reviewed
the signs last week. Four of these signs are part of a 2017 Capital Improvement Project and two
signs are part of recently approved private development. Each sign can have up to 400 words
along with images. Trice showed the Commission the design mock-up for the signs and asked
the Commission for their thoughts.
Chuck Thomas stated that he was pleased with the edits staff made since the Historical
Commission meeting.
Trice stated that the original draft from the spring was written by a graduate student and that
staff had been editing it since then.
Koertje asked if "1950s" should be "1950s was" or "1950s were."
Trice stated that they could change the language to avoid the was/were dilemma.
Chuck Thomas agreed and suggested, for example, that it could be written as, "The 1950s, a
decade..."
Trice asked if the Commission had questions about the locations of the signs.
Chuck Thomas questioned the appropriateness of the Dillon Road location. He asked if
spectators or tourists would want to stop in a commercial district to read a sign.
Trice stated that the sign was being funded by a developer as part of demolition remediation,
and it was required by part of their Section 106 process. She added that employees in the area
could learn from the sign. She added that the Mine Hoist was also funded as part of Section 106
demolition remediation.
Ulm asked if the interpretive sign program would grow over time.
Trice stated that staff has not considered how many signs they would want in total over time, but
that they wanted to have more including for buildings that had already been demolished and for
the downtown area.
Koertje asked about the sign at Murphy Farm.
