Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Library&Museum Services
City of Louisville,Colorado
February 2017
1E, Cityoi
Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 1878
301 Pine St. History
Legal Description: Lots 12, 13, & the south 1/2 of Lot 14, Block 8, Louisville Heights
subdivision
Year of Construction:circa 1907
Summary: This house is unusual in that the daughter of James and Emma Clark, who
originally built it and lived in it in the early 1900s, later became the owner 51 years later
and lived in the house again for over 30 years, from the 1960s to the 1990s. In between,
there were several other owners.
Development of the Louisville Heights Subdivision;Date of Construction
The Louisville Heights Addition in which this house sits was platted in 1904 by the
Colorado Mortgage and Investment Co. Ltd.
The descendants of James Clark have reported to the Historical Museum that Clark built
this house. The 1948 Boulder County Assessor card for this property as well as the
current Boulder County Assessor website both give 1907 as the year of construction.
Although the County has been found to be in error with respect to the dates of
construction of some historic buildings in Louisville, this date appears to be accurate.
Documents recorded with Boulder County in 1909 show that James Clark already had an
ownership interest in the house prior to that year. Although the documents did not
specify the year in which Clark acquired the ownership interest, it is possible that it
could have been by 1907, which is the year in which Boulder County indicates that the
house was built. Also, the house does appear on the 1909 Drumm's Wall Map of
Louisville, so it was built by 1909. For the foregoing reasons, the estimated date of
construction is circa 1907.
The following excerpt from the 1909 Drumm's Wall Map shows this house in the very
center of the image, on the northeast corner of McKinley and Pine. The house was built
in the area at the farthest southwest corner of Old Town Louisville, with farmland and
wildlife very close by. The image also shows the lack of other structures near the house
1
