child, came back later in her life to own and live at 301 Pine from 1963 until around the <br /> time of her death, which was in 1999. <br /> In 1912, James Clark sold the property at 301 Pine to his wife's brother, Newton <br /> Rockley. The Clark family then moved to 708 Pine in Louisville. <br /> Newton Rockley(1887-1969) was born in Kansas and married Minnie Baessler(1891- <br /> 1946) of Louisville in 1912. The 1916 directory for Louisville lists them as living at 201 <br /> McKinley, which was the address for 301 Pine under the address system being used at <br /> that time. Children born to them while they lived at 301 Pine were Lester and Melvin. <br /> They had additional children after they moved from this house. <br /> In 1918, Newton Rockley sold 301 Pine to Charles Smith and moved down Pine to live at <br /> 716 Pine near his sister, Emma Rockley Clark, and her family. <br /> Charles Smith Ownership, 1918-1921 <br /> In 1918, Charles Smith acquired ownership of 301 Pine from Newton Rockley. Due to <br /> there having been more than one Charles Smith in Louisville, it is not clear which of <br /> these men was the owner. The evidence suggests that Smith rented the house to John <br /> and Elizabeth Binks, as they are shown in the 1920 census as residing in this location at <br /> Pine and McKinley with their young son, John, age 5. The 1920 census listed them as <br /> renting. In 1921, Charles Smith sold 301 Pine to the couple. <br /> Binks Family Ownership, 1921-1948 <br /> John "Jack" Binks (1886-1966) and Elizabeth Binks (1888-1954) purchased 301 Pine in <br /> 1921. As noted above, it is believed that they were already renting the house. He was <br /> born in England and she was born in Illinois. He worked as a coal miner. <br /> Jack Binks then purchased 701 Garfield (the parcel just to the east) in 1923, and that <br /> became the Binks family home. Records indicate that the Binks family then rented out <br /> 301 Pine to a number of renters. Since Jack and Elizabeth Binks lived right next door, this <br /> was no doubt a convenient arrangement whereby they were able to bring in rental <br /> income and easily keep an eye on their rental property. Among these renters are <br /> believed to have been, in the early 1940s, Victor LeComte (1901-1980) and Margaret <br /> Demoulin LeComte (1906-1991), who were both members of Louisville's French <br /> community. Also in the 1940s,Thomas Burgess (1899-1969) and Nora Burgess (1897- <br /> 1978), with their children Evelyn and Gladys, are believed to have rented 301 Pine. <br /> The following images show the photo of the house from the 1948 County Assessor card <br /> and a ground layout sketch of the house at that time, during the ownership by the Binks <br /> family.
