child, came back later in her life to own and live at 301 Pine from 1963 until around the
time of her death, which was in 1999.
In 1912, James Clark sold the property at 301 Pine to his wife's brother, Newton
Rockley. The Clark family then moved to 708 Pine in Louisville.
Newton Rockley(1887-1969) was born in Kansas and married Minnie Baessler(1891-
1946) of Louisville in 1912. The 1916 directory for Louisville lists them as living at 201
McKinley, which was the address for 301 Pine under the address system being used at
that time. Children born to them while they lived at 301 Pine were Lester and Melvin.
They had additional children after they moved from this house.
In 1918, Newton Rockley sold 301 Pine to Charles Smith and moved down Pine to live at
716 Pine near his sister, Emma Rockley Clark, and her family.
Charles Smith Ownership, 1918-1921
In 1918, Charles Smith acquired ownership of 301 Pine from Newton Rockley. Due to
there having been more than one Charles Smith in Louisville, it is not clear which of
these men was the owner. The evidence suggests that Smith rented the house to John
and Elizabeth Binks, as they are shown in the 1920 census as residing in this location at
Pine and McKinley with their young son, John, age 5. The 1920 census listed them as
renting. In 1921, Charles Smith sold 301 Pine to the couple.
Binks Family Ownership, 1921-1948
John "Jack" Binks (1886-1966) and Elizabeth Binks (1888-1954) purchased 301 Pine in
1921. As noted above, it is believed that they were already renting the house. He was
born in England and she was born in Illinois. He worked as a coal miner.
Jack Binks then purchased 701 Garfield (the parcel just to the east) in 1923, and that
became the Binks family home. Records indicate that the Binks family then rented out
301 Pine to a number of renters. Since Jack and Elizabeth Binks lived right next door, this
was no doubt a convenient arrangement whereby they were able to bring in rental
income and easily keep an eye on their rental property. Among these renters are
believed to have been, in the early 1940s, Victor LeComte (1901-1980) and Margaret
Demoulin LeComte (1906-1991), who were both members of Louisville's French
community. Also in the 1940s,Thomas Burgess (1899-1969) and Nora Burgess (1897-
1978), with their children Evelyn and Gladys, are believed to have rented 301 Pine.
The following images show the photo of the house from the 1948 County Assessor card
and a ground layout sketch of the house at that time, during the ownership by the Binks
family. The house was 576 square feet at the time.
3
