Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Library & Museum Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
January 2017
LLouisville
COLORADO SINCE 1878
920 Main St. and 924 Main St. History
The properties at 920 and 924 Main Street have an interconnected history. The parcel
on which they were built used to be larger and consisted of Lots 9 & 10, Block 1, in
Louisville. This property that the Clarkson family owned originally contained only a
house located on Lot 10 that is now 924 Main Street. It was not until 1948 that an Italian
grocery, "Joe's Fruit Store," was added to the south end of the property, which is the
northern side of Lot 9. This building became 920 Main Street and was operated as an
Italian market for about 55 years, serving Louisville's residents of Italian descent. Store
Proprietor Joe D'Amato then lived next door with his family at 924 Main, which was
remodeled. Another business that was constructed on part of the Clarkson's yard was
the Bugdust Pool Hall at 916 Main. 916 Main is no longer part of the parcel containing
920 Main and 924 Main.
The history of the building at 924 Main St., being older, will be given first in this report,
along with the chain of ownership of the parcel, followed by the history of 920 Main,
which was the later building. 920 Main was included in Louisville historic building
surveys in 1985 and 2000. These reports are incorporated by reference into this report.
Legal Description: Northern 15 feet of Lot 9 and all of Lot 10, Block 1, Original Louisville
Development of Original Louisville
This property is part of the original "Plat of the Town of Louisville" registered by Louis
Nawatny in 1878.
