The
Board read a letter from resident Linda Towe expressing her
wishes to save the cottonwoods. Public comments were heard
from seven of the residents present. Six of those residents
supported saving the trees with the following comments and
staff response.
• Suggestions to follow the social trial visible on Google
Maps making it concrete.
• Questions as to previous City concern regarding
diseased cottonwoods on other trails. Staff explained
that this is a very high use area compared to lesser used
trails.
• Split rail fence comment. Staff explained this will not
meet liability requirements.
• Support to leave the diseased trees hoping to get more
years out of them.
• Questioned cost of removal of the 2 trees. Staff gave
estimate of $2000 per tree.
• Concern with beehive in the trunk of one tree as well as
other wildlife that use the trees. Staff would plan to try
to have the beehive removed by a professional bee
keeper.
• Suggestion to make the trees an educational
opportunity for wildlife habitat.
• One resident was in favor of removal of at least one tree
with the following comment: support to remove eastern
most tree which is compromised and possibly western
tree as well.
