TO: MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
FROM: MALCOLM FLEMING, CITY MANAGER
DATE: SEPTEMBER 9, 2008
SUBJECT: DISCUSSION -GATEWAY SIGNAGE
ORIGINATING DEPARTMENT: PARKS & RECREATION
SUMMARY:
Gateway signs have been a goal in Louisville for quite some time. They were recommended in
the 1998 Landscape Beautification Plan by Shapins & Associates, and have been consistently
pursued by the Business, Retention & Development Committee.
The 2008 Budget includes $30,000 for the design of the Gateway Signs. After a thorough
interview process, Traci Jones of Studio No. 6 was selected to develop the design and on April
15, 2008 City Council approved a contract and not-to-exceed fee of $15,500 for design and
master planning services. After spending an extensive amount of time in Louisville, interviewing
staff and grasping the essence of Louisville, Traci presented 5 concept designs to staff on July
31, 2008. The staff team came to consensus in recommending the concept being presented to
you at this meeting.
There are 8 potential locations for the signs, they include:
- South Boulder Road & McCaslin Boulevard
- South Boulder Road & the Eastern City Limits
- Highway 42 & Paschal Drive
- Highway 42 & 104tH
- Dillon Road & 104tH
- 96tH Street & Northwest Parkway
- 88tH Street & Campus Drive
- McCaslin Boulevard & Highway 36
The sign design is intended to be flexible and adapt to the differences in scale, site distances,
& traffic speeds at each location.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The preliminary cost estimate for the sign is $120,000 ($39,000 of the $120,000 is for LED
lighting). Construction of the signs is intended to be phased over 4 years, constructing two
signs per year. Staff will be requesting funding through the Capital Projects Fund. Additionally,
funding for the LED lighting is being requested through an energy efficiency grant.
SUBJECT DISCUSSION -GATEWAY SIGNS AGENDA ITEM
