CRITERIA FOR LANDMARKING:
The Historic Preservation Commission shall review the landmark application based on
the criteria outlined in the Louisville Municipal Code 15.36.050:
CRITERIA
FINDINGS
Landmarks must be at
least 50 years old
The principal structure at 620 Grant Avenue was
constructed between 1905 and1906. There is no clear
date for the small outbuilding but it does appear on the
1948 assessor card.
Landmarks must meet
one or more of the criteria
for architectural, social or
geographic/environmental
significance
Architectural Significance - Represents a built
environment of a group of people in an era of
history that is culturally significant to Louisville.
• The structure at 620 Grant Avenue has
Folk Victorian elements and has
maintained its overall form. The property
also has an outbuilding typical of early 20th
century Louisville.
Social Significance - Exemplifies cultural, political,
economic, or social heritage of the community.
• The structure at 620 Grant Avenue is associated
with the Harney family from Slovakia and located
in a neighborhood with other Eastern European
households.
Landmarks should meet
one or more criteria for
physical integrity
The house adds character and value to Old Town
Louisville. The house is in the original location. Integrity
of design is somewhat compromised by the replacement
siding, window alterations and rear addition. The addition
has a minimal impact on the view from Grant Avenue due
to its size and rear location. The intact outbuilding does
not have integrity of location but it contributes to the
overall character of the property.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The landmark approval includes a $1,000 landmark bonus from the Historic
Preservation Fund. The balance of the Historic Preservation Fund was $1,732,705 at
the end of 2017.
RECOMMENDATION:
The structure appears to have maintained significant architectural integrity since its
early 20th century construction. Staff recommends that the property be named for the
Harney Family who lived in the home for 65 years. Although the shed has some level of
integrity and significance, the applicants have not included it in the landmark
application. Staff finds that small shed does not alter the principal structure's landmark
5
