The home <br />was located in a neighborhood with other Eastern European households. <br />Development of the Pleasant Hill Addition <br />The subdivision in which this house is located, Pleasant Hill Addition, was platted in 1894. It was <br />developed on behalf of Orrin Welch, the half-brother of Charles C. Welch, the man who started <br />the Welch Mine and played a prominent role in the founding of Louisville. Orrin Welch was not <br />a resident of this area, and many transactions on his behalf were carried out by Charles C. <br />Welch and Jeannette Welch. <br />Harney Family Ownership, 1905/06-1970; Date of Construction <br />John Harney (1872-1937) purchased Lots 4 and 5, Block 12 (which today makes up 620 Grant) in <br />1906 from Orrin Welch. Charles C. Welch signed the document on behalf of Orrin Welch as his <br />attorney-in-fact. <br />John Harney, whose surname appears to have originally been Hornyak, was born in Slovakia <br />and came to the U.S. in about 1902. (His brother, Joseph, also came to Louisville; Joseph's <br />family was associated with the farm that now constitutes the Harney-Lastoka Open Space.) <br />John married Katherine Puskar (1878-1971) in Slovakia. Like John, she was born in Slovakia. <br />Their children Helen, Margaret, and Mary are also believed to have been born in Slovakia. <br />1 <br />
