Conditions are ripe for a bumper crop of dandelions, probably the worst year I have ever seen. I
attached a couple of pictures of places I was at today of bluegrass areas, one in front of City Hall and the
other is Centennial Park. The dandelions at the Arboretum are certainly not unique, a challenge we are
currently having at all sites. But unless directed otherwise, City staff will continue to rely on mowing for
weed control at this site. We'll be out mowing as frequently as possible until the dandelion flush
subsides. We are hoping it will start slowing down soon.
Feel free to contact me directly with any further questions or comments.
Dean
Dean Johnson, Jr.
Parks Superintendent
City of Louisville
(303) 335-4774
deani@louisvilleco.gov
From: Bob & Denise Kiepe
Sent: Friday, May 11, 2018 10:37 AM
To: Ashley Stolzmann; Jeff Lipton; Susan Loo
Subject: Fwd: Arboretum
Dear council members,
It was with interest and concern that I followed the exchange between yourselves and my neighbor Mario Janapour
yesterday concerning the maintenance of the arboretum. While a token effort was made for a couple of hours
yesterday at mowing a portion of the site no further progress has been made at the time of this email. Below you will
find the top picture taken a few minutes ago and the lower taken Sunday.
What I don't understand is why given the problems facing seasonal hiring the City would find it in our best interests to
take the maintenance of the arboretum back "in house" after several successful years of contract maintenance.
Sitting on my back patio about 6pm last evening we had a strong gust of wind lasting several minutes from direct
north blowing literally thousands of weed seeds that had not been cared for into the Cherrywood 11 subdivision. This is
totally uncalled for and inexcusable.
1 was at the dedication of the Arboretum in the 90"s (we purchased our home in 93') and listened to the Mayor and
director of Parks claim that this property was to become the "crown Jewel" of Louisville, to say that the shine is off the
jewel is in no way an understatement.
I saw the response from Joe Stevens claiming and "integrated weed management plan" was in place at this site, is
that to mean we are propagating weeds for public use as there appears to be no "management of the population
whatsoever.
There is no excuse for this budget or otherwise, this is total mismanagement of a city resource by staff who either
don't get it or could care Tess about the jobs they've been charged with carrying out.
Please impress upon city staff that this property is to be taken care of in the manner that a jewel deserves.
Thank you for your time and dedication to the City of Louisville.
Sincerely,
Bob and Denise Kiepe
102 Cherrywood Lane
