ARCHITECTURAL INTEGRITY:
The building at 809 Main Street is an early twentieth century wood frame commercial
building, with a false front facade. The building is rectangular and supported by a
concrete or stone foundation. A shed -roofed addition was constructed on the rear in the
1960s or 1970s. The facade fronting Main Street features two large two -light storefront
display windows with red brick rowlock slipsills. The windows flank a glass -in -wood
frame entry door with a transom light. The kick plate area, below the windows, are faced
with red brick and brick columns are located at either end of the facade. The upper
facade wall features horizontal wood siding with a projecting cornice. The following
primary changes occurred over time:
• Adding the brick columns and brick veneer below the windows — circa 1963
• Replacement of original six -light windows — between 1965 and 1978
• Rear addition to the main building — 1960s or 1970s
• Addition of a 16'x23' walk-in cooler accessory building at the rear of the property
- 2015
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE AND CRITERIA FOR FINDING PROBABLE CAUSE
FOR LISTING AS LOCAL LANDMARK:
To receive grant funding, the HPC must find probable cause that the property meets the
landmark criteria. Landmarks must be at least 50 years old and meet one or more of
the criteria for architectural, social or geographic/environmental significance as
described in Louisville Municipal Code (LMC) Section 15.36.050(A). The City Council
may exempt a landmark from the age standard if it is found to be exceptionally
important in other significance criteria.
Staff has found probable cause to believe this application complies with the
following criteria:
Architectural Significance:
Exemplifies specific elements of an architectural style or period
• The structure at 809 Main Street exemplifies early twentieth century
false front frame vernacular storefront and is representative of one
of the predominate commercial architectural styles on Main Street
during one of the earliest periods in the City's history.
Social Significance:
Exemplifies cultural, political, economic, or social heritage of the
community.
• The structure at 809 Main Street is significant for its association with early
sustained commercial development in Louisville.
• The structure at 809 Main Street is associated with Celeste Romano who
represents Louisville's Italian social and cultural heritage.
6
