Earliest Owners
In 1895, John Connell transferred a larger parcel of property made up of multiple lots in
Acme Place, which included the property at 520 Grant, to Fred Adams, who conveyed it
to William Beamond the same year. In 1896, Beamond conveyed it to Herman De
Gabain. De Gabain transferred lots in different transactions to members of the Romano
family. These deeds were recorded in 1896 and 1901. Members of the Romano family
receiving the property were Mike Romano and George Romano. Although little is known
about them due to their common names, the evidence suggests that they were related
to one another.
It is believed that George Romano and Mike Romano lived on the lots, and possibly in
the house if it had already been constructed by 1903 and relocated to this location.
However, this is not known for certain. The 1904 directory shows that George, a miner,
and his wife, Domenica, lived on "Grant btw. Pine & Hutchinson," as did Mike, also a
miner, and his wife, Francisca. 520 Grant is located between Pine and Hutchinson.
Bruno Family Ownership, 1919-1942
According to a warranty deed recorded in 1919, the owner of 520 Grant became John C.
Bruno. Bruno was a street peddler, also described as a fruit peddler and as a
huckster, listed with a Grant address for directories from the time of his purchase of the
property until the late 1930s. The addresses given were 11 Grant, 25 Grant, and 21
Grant, all of which most likely referred to 520 Grant under Louisville's old address
system. The evidence shows that the Bruno family did not own another home, only this
one. Also, it was not unusual for there to be variations in the addresses for one house.
John Bruno was born in about 1884 in Italy and came to the US in circa 1904-1908. His
wife, Lucia, was born in Italy in 1878 and came to the US in about 1897. She had children
from a previous marriage. At the time of the 1920 census, the household at 520 Grant
consisted of John; Lucia; their children Edward, 3, and Antonio, a baby; and Lucia's
children, who were Margaret Oberto, 21, and Carlo Oberto, 17. At the time of the 1930
census, John and Lucia Bruno were still living in the house with their sons, now listed as
Gesualdo and Antonino. Lucia Bruno died in 1933 and John Bruno died in 1938.
In 1942, an administrator for the estate of John C. Bruno sold the property at 520 Grant
to Herman H. Steinbaugh.
Dubray Family Ownership, 1943-1949
The next year after acquiring it, Herman H. Steinbaugh conveyed this property to
Marguerite and Ferno Dubray, Jr. They lived in the house in the 1940s, at a time when
the house's address was 516 Grant.
