Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Library & Museum Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
September 2017
IL:
City c f
Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 1878
620 Grant Avenue History
Legal Description: Lots 4 & 5, Block 12, Pleasant Hill Addition
Year of Construction: 1905-06
Summary: The Harney family from Slovakia owned this home for about 65 years. The home
was located in a neighborhood with other Eastern European households.
Development of the Pleasant Hill Addition
The subdivision in which this house is located, Pleasant Hill Addition, was platted in 1894. It was
developed on behalf of Orrin Welch, the half-brother of Charles C. Welch, the man who started
the Welch Mine and played a prominent role in the founding of Louisville. Orrin Welch was not
a resident of this area, and many transactions on his behalf were carried out by Charles C.
Welch and Jeannette Welch.
Harney Family Ownership, 1905/06-1970; Date of Construction
John Harney (1872-1937) purchased Lots 4 and 5, Block 12 (which today makes up 620 Grant) in
1906 from Orrin Welch. Charles C. Welch signed the document on behalf of Orrin Welch as his
attorney -in -fact.
John Harney, whose surname appears to have originally been Hornyak, was born in Slovakia
and came to the U.S. in about 1902. (His brother, Joseph, also came to Louisville; Joseph's
family was associated with the farm that now constitutes the Harney-Lastoka Open Space.)
John married Katherine Puskar (1878-1971) in Slovakia. Like John, she was born in Slovakia.
Their children Helen, Margaret, and Mary are also believed to have been born in Slovakia.
1
