Before the two original buildings next door at 801 Main were moved away in 1905 to 721 Grant
and 901 Main, another photo was taken that appears to show the edge of the current building
at 809 Main on the far right:
LHM 88-01-16
In the early 1900s, a second hand store is shown as having been located in the building that is
now 809 Main. The following excerpt from the 1908 Sanborn Fires Insurance Map shows this
building identified as a second hand store. The building shown on the 1900 Sanborn Map
appears to be now be longer.
According to past survey reports done on 809 Main, the proprietors of the second hand store
may have been Powers & McQuain. The Louisville directory for 1908 shows that Powers &
McQuain were "dealers in new and second hand furniture." They are also listed in the 1909
directory. For 1910 and 1911, the listing was changed to a furniture store operated by I.E.
Powers.
The following photo from Boulder's Carnegie Library for Local History, and a close-up from a
Louisville Historical Museum photo, show the second hand store at 809 Main on the right of the
photo in circa 1908-1910:
Carnegie Branch Library for Local History, 213-2-12.
3
