Although there are just three addresses, they represent six historic structures plus additional
outbuildings. The Henning Mortuary building, the Mossoni House, the residence behind the
Mossoni House, and the structures that comprise the Marketplace Building are all older than
the buildings next to them on the south side of that block due to there having been a fire that
destroyed the buildings on the south side of the block in 1926 (covering 2 % lots out of the 6).
For purposes of this report, the buildings will be called by the names they are best known as
even though they may not be the names of the families that originally built the structures.
Nearly all of the lots on both the east and west sides of the 800 block of Main Street historically
held residences. The 1893 Sanborn fire insurance map shows twelve dwellings along Main
Street between Spruce and Walnut, with just two buildings at the northeast corner of Main and
Spruce being used as businesses. The following Sanborn maps for 1893, 1900, and 1908 are
shown here with the properties of 820, 836, and 844 Main outlined in red:
,a.
WALNUT
2
