property to James Miller and moved from Louisville. James Miller owned the property a
few months before reselling it.
Schreiter Family Ownership, 1906-1919; Bakery Business
In 1906, Henry Schreiter (1843-1907) purchased the property at what is now 844 Main
St. It is believed that Schreiter, who was a farmer in the area, was the owner who added
a bakery. A structure at the rear served as a bake house and oven. The 2000 Colorado
Cultural Resource Survey concluded that this structure is now part of the current
building. The 1908 Sanborn map, as seen above, shows a building labeled "Bakery" that
fronted directly onto Main Street. At some point, the structure that abutted Main Street
was removed, but the year is not known.
Property records indicate that when Henry Schreiter died in January 1907, his widow,
Anna, and their adult children became the owners. The adult children conveyed
ownership to their mother as sole owner. In December 1907, the bakery and house
were advertised in the Denver Rocky Mountain News as being for rent:
BAKERY 81101', WITII r►-RnO11t 11OTJ 1'
for rent; besit location in town.
SCI!RELTF:It, owner, i oulsvillra, Colo.
The bakery was also operated by A Schreiter son, Paul, in at least 1908. It is not clear
from the 1910 census who was occupying the house or whether the bakery shop was in
operation at that time.
In 1915, Anna Schreiter transferred ownership of the property at 844 Main to her
daughter, Marie Schreiter Montgomery. The 1916 Louisville directory indicates that
Charles Powell, an undertaker, had his business in this location at that time, and it may
have started there even earlier. In 1919, Marie Schreiter Montgomery sold 844 Main to
Charles Powell, who had apparently been renting it.
Powell Mortuary, circa 1915-1923 (owner 1919-1923)
Louisville undertaker Charles W. Powell acquired the property from the Schreiters in
1919, with the site listed as being his mortuary and residential address by 1916.
The 1920 census shows Charles (born abt. 1881) and Emma (born abt. 1885) Powell to
be living in the location of what is now 844 Main St. He had his undertaking business
and it appears from the census records that they were also renting to a family consisting
of Absalom and Mary Stewart and their sons, Earl and Elmer.
The following photo said to date from the early 1920s shows that the bakery shop had
become an undertaker business with the sign "Powell Undertaker" above the section
abutting Main:
5
