The house was constructed by 1900 and was the home of the
Jane and Isaac Pickering family in 1900. A Historical Survey report on this property was
completed in 2000, but mostly information available from 1940 and later was utilized for that
report.
Development of Original Louisville
Louis Nawatny platted Original Louisville in 1878 and named it after himself. This property is
within the area of Original Louisville. All of the lots in this area originated with Nawatny's
ownership.
Louis Nawatny is believed to have worked for Charles C. Welch, who started the Welch Mine in
1877. Nawatny moved away from Louisville by 1880. His contributions to the development of
Louisville have been documented in the Fall 2010 issue of The Louisville Historian, found here:
http://library.louisvilleco.gov/Portals/1/pdf/Louisville%20Historian/2010-4 Fall.pdf .
Early Owners
Louis Nawatny sold all of Lot 2 to Thomas Knight in 1879, one year after the establishment of
Louisville in 1878. Knight is listed in the 1880 census as living in Louisville. He was born in
England in about 1848 and was one of the coal miners who came from England in the first years
of Louisville's history as a town.
