The property was sold by the heirs of Frank Oberding in 1925.
Walters Family Ownership, 1925-1970
The family of Clyde Walters and Eva James Walters owned the property at 940 Main for 45 years. Clyde
was born in Lafayette in 1893. His father, William, had come from England and had been an early
pioneer in Louisville. Eva James was a member of one of Louisville's Italian families, the child of
Gregorio and Savaria DiGiacomo (the surname James having been Americanized from DiGiacomo). She
was born in Louisville in 1896 and grew up in the Miners Field neighborhood in Louisville.
They married in 1916 and rented a house on South St. near Miners Field to the east of the train tracks,
then moved to this house at the corner of South and Main to the west of the train tracks. During their
ownership of 940 Main, South Street crossed the tracks and so Eva Walters' relatives living on the east
side of the tracks were very accessible.
Census records from 1930 and 1940 show the family to be living at this location. In 1930, Clyde was
working as a coal miner. In 1940, he was working in street construction. In the 1950s and 1960s, Clyde
Walters had a home -based plumbing business called Silver State Plumbing. Their children, who
graduated from Louisville High School in the 1930s and 1940s, were Vernon, Gladys, and Wilma. Clyde
Walters died in 1970, prompting the sale of the property. Eva Walters died in 1982.
The following images show the house and ground layout from the 1948 County Assessor card:
