1890 Denver Rocky Mountain News, Mahlon Johnson was often called "Ajax" "after his famous
coal mine near Louisville."
Background Information on Cunning Ownership of Property from 1892 to 1991
The George Cunning (1868-1929) and Margaret Thirlaway Cunning family of Louisville owned
the parcel at 737 Johnson with the parcel at 729 Johnson for about 72 years. Their ownership of
the first lot they acquired started in 1892 and extended until 1968. Their property consisted of
Lots 11, 12, 13, and 14 of Block 5, Johnson's First Addition. Two houses (in which members of
the Cunning family lived) used to stand on the Cunning lots, one at what is today 737 Johnson
and one at what is today 729 Johnson. Both were built in the 1890s. The property shared one
parcel number, ID #19483 (based on a property numbering system that is no longer used by
Boulder County).
In 1968, Howard K. Ingram purchased all four lots from members of the Cunning family. The
second of three Assessor's cards for this property stated that as of 1968, the house then at 737
Johnson was "going to be torn down" and that it had no bathroom and no "sewerage," and it
hadn't been lived in "for years." It is believed that 737 Johnson then sat vacant for over twenty
years. It was still co -owned with 729 Johnson during this time.
Current House and Its Relocation to 737 Johnson
The three Boulder County Assessor cards for this parcel can be viewed online here by
conducting a search on "737 Johnson": http://Iouisville.pastperfect-
online.com/30967cgi/mweb.exe?request=ks
According to a notation on the third Assessor's card for 737 Johnson, the current house was
moved from a different location in Boulder County in two pieces on 9/1/90.
In 1991, the lots were divided into two parcels (729 Johnson and 737 Johnson). The way that
the Boulder County's Assessor's Office expressed this on an Assessor's card was that 737
Johnson was "Split from ID 19483 7/29/91." 729 Johnson retained the ID number of 19483.
Howard K. Ingram sold 737 Johnson to David M. and Lisa M. Anderson the same year, in 1991.
He also sold 729 Johnson to a different party in 1991.
(Many buildings in and around Louisville were relocated for economic and other reasons. The photo of the house was evidently taken when it was
located on S. 88th St. This conclusion is based on the fact that the Assessor's card to which the
2
