Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Library & Museum Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
December 2016
ILZ Cityof
Louisville
COLORAnO • SINCE 187E
840 McKinley Ave. History
Legal Description: Lots 21 & 22, Block 5, Louisville Heights subdivision
Year of Construction: circa 1934
Summary: This house, built in about 1934, was connected with the
Helburg/Callahan/Brugger family for over 60 years.
Development of the Louisville Heights Subdivision; Date of Construction
The Louisville Heights Addition in which this house sits was first developed in 1904 by
the Colorado Mortgage and Investment Co. Ltd.
The 1948 Boulder County Assessor card for this property as well as the current Boulder
County Assessor website both give 1934 as the year of construction. Although the
County has been found to be in error with respect to the dates of construction of some
historic buildings in Louisville, this date appears to be accurate. The 1909 Drumm's Wall
Map of Louisville indicates that there was not a house at this location at that time. In
addition, a new owner purchased the property in 1934 and the available directories for
the years after 1934 show residents of a house there. For the foregoing reasons, the
estimated date of construction is 1934.
Earliest Ownership of Lots
It is believed that these lots sat undeveloped for many years after the Louisville Heights
Addition was platted. The earliest record of property ownership for this parcel, after the
subdivision was platted, indicates that Edward Affolter purchased it in 1919 from the
Boulder County Treasurer. Edward Affolter was a Louisville attorney who also bought
and sold property. In 1934, Edward Affolter sold the lots on which 840 McKinley is
located to Peter Fiechtl.
Fiechtl Ownership, 1934-1945
1
