playing lead on the accordion with his own nine piece orchestra. His father was the
Louisville dealer for Maytag, the sponsor of Richard La Salle's first orchestra.
Richard was put on the staff of the NBC affiliated radio station in Denver, and he
performed in the Denver area as well as at the Boulderado in Boulder. Richard La Salle
graduated from Louisville High School in 1935, so it is believed that he resided at 1041
Grant for about four years. He then began to attend the University of Colorado, but it
wasn't long before he received offers to join orchestras. He began a twenty year career
playing with his own orchestra at clubs and hotels all over the U.S., including the
Coconut Grove, Beverly Hills Hotel, and the Persian Room at the Plaza Hotel in New York
City. In the 1960s and 1970s, he wrote scores for movies and television, including the
move "Alice Doesn't Live Here Any More" and the TV shows "Lost in Space," "F Troop,"
and "The Fugitive."
The lead article of the Winter 2007 Louisville Historian, entitled "Richard La Salle:
Performer, Composer, and Louisville Native Son" appears at the end of this report. His
Wikipedia entry at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard LaSalle and his entry on the
Internet Movie Data Base (IMDB) at http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0006161/ give the
highlights of his career.
The 1940 census shows Toney and Katherine to be living at 1041 Grant, and indicates
that they were also living there five years before, in 1935. Toney was listed as a
merchant dealing in "home furnishings." Older residents of Louisville have remarked of
the La Salle Furniture Store that it supplied nearly every household in Louisville with
furniture.
The following images are from the 1948 County Assessor card for this property and
show the house in 1948 (looking southwest from the intersection of Grant and Short)
followed by the ground layout:
3
