The 1910 census records show that Lewis Tobey was living in this location with his wife, Jennie, and
their son, Earl, and that he was the owner of the property. This is somewhat inconsistent with the
County property records, which indicate that he transferred the property back to J.C. Williams in
1909.
(Lewis Tobey's brother, Harlow, purchased the large lot to the south in 1904 and lived there during
approximately the same years as Lewis. Harlow was also a mine foreman.)
Other Owners. c.1909-1910 to 1920
The County property records are inconsistent with respect to this property during this period. The
records do not show a clear pattern of the property having been purchased by someone and then sold
by the same person during this period. For example, Charles Simpson, a member of the prominent
Simpson family of Boulder County, is shown to have sold this property, but no record could be found
that he ever acquired it. This inability to complete the chain of ownership could be due to deeds not
having been promptly recorded with the County, or variations in the spellings of names.
Harley Fletcher. 1920 to c. 1927-28
Based on County records, Harley Fletcher bought this property in 1920 and owned it for seven years,
but appears to have lived here even longer. Harley (1891-1977) and his wife, Irene (1897- 1985),
raised their three children, Verna, Lula Belle, and Harley Jr. in the house. The family appears at this
location in Louisville directories for the 1920s, even up to 1928. Harley was a truck driver who did
road work, according to the 1930 census. Later, he worked as a security guard at the Public Service
Co. Valmont Plant.
Margaret Smith, c. 1927-28 to c. 1930-1933
No specific information could be found regarding this owner.
Charles & Chelsea Bottinelli. c. 1930-1933 to 1944
County property records show that Charles and Chelsea Bottinelli acquired the property at 1116
Jefferson in 1933, but they are shown in the 1930 census as already living at this location and being
the actual owners of it, not just renters. It is possible that they purchased it long before 1933 and the
deed was not recorded right away, which would not have been an unusual occurrence at that time.
They were also living in this location on Jefferson at the time of the 1940 census.
Directories also indicate that they lived in this house with their son, Charles Richard Bottinelli.
There were actually four people by the name of Charles Bottinelli in Louisville, all related. Based on
an examination of the relevant records, this owner named Charles Bottinelli was born in 1899 into
one of Louisville's Italian immigrant families, grew up at 929 La Farge Avenue in Louisville, and died in
2
