Peter James transferred ownership of several lots in Little Italy to Mary James. She sold Lots 7
and 8 of Block 7 to Michele Zarlengo in 1903. Michele Zarlengo's wife, Angela, also became an
owner by a deed recorded in 1905.
Michele Zarlengo (1874-1961) and Angela Falasca Zarlengo (1880-1939) were from Carovilli,
Italy and they came to the U.S. in about 1902. His parents and his brother immigrated at about
the same time, and they also owned property in Louisville and lived in Louisville. According to
the 1904 Louisville directory, Michele Zarlengo worked as a coal miner.
By a deed recorded in 1906, Michele and Angela Zarlengo sold Lot 8 to Giuseppe Piscitella
(1874-1947) and Dora Piscitella (1879-1962). (They sold Lot 7 to the Italian Jacovitto/Jacovetta
family.) Like the Zarlengos, the Piscitellas had young children. However, it could not be
confirmed whether they ever lived at this location due to the lack of residential directories and
census records from the period of their ownership. By a deed recorded the next year, 1907, the
Piscitella family sold Lot 8 to Antonio Gentile.
Gentile Ownership (1907-1947); Date of Construction
In 1907, Antonio Gentile purchased Lot 8, which is the current legal description for 1436
Cannon.
Antonio Gentile was born in 1879 in Italy and married Anna Marie DiCroce in about 1898. She
was born in Italy in about 1876. Their first two children, Josephine and Julia, were born in Italy
in 1900 and 1904. Their additional children, born in Colorado, were Anna, John, Sam, and
Angelina. The 1910 federal census shows the Gentile family to be living on Cannon Street in
Little Italy, and it is believed that they were living at 1436 Cannon at the time. By a deed
recorded in 1914, members of the Gentile family also became owners of Lot 9 to the south of
Lot 8.
The 1948 County Assessor card contains conflicting information with respect to the date of
construction of this house. The card gave 1908 as the estimated date of construction, though it
also stated that the house was "48+" years old in 1948, which suggests that it could have even
been constructed in 1900 or earlier. The Boulder County Assessor's website also gives 1908 as
the date of construction for the house at 1436 Cannon, with this date likely taken directly from
the year stated on the 1948 card. Boulder County property records have sometimes been found
to be in error with respect to the dates of construction of historic buildings in Louisville, so
other evidence is looked to. In this case, the house at 1436 Cannon does appear on the 1909
Drumm's Wall Map of Louisville, so it was built by 1909. Michele Zarlengo purchased the
property by a deed recorded in 1903. His parents, Dominic and Appolonia, purchased a lot
across the street from 1436 Cannon by a deed recorded in 1906. Also, one of the Zarlengos'
children, Ora Grace, was reportedly born in Louisville in 1903. The 1904 Louisville directory
2
