The 1900 census places the Rand family in Denver, with Rand's occupation being given
as farmer, and in 1910, they were also in Denver, and Rand was retired and with his
"own income." It is possible that while Rand still owned the farm, someone else was
farming it. However, this is not known for certain.
The house in which the Rands lived on the farm is believed to have been in the vicinity
of the current house, as the 1899 Willits Farm Map shows a house in this location on the
property.
Henry & Gladys Showalter Ownership, 1912-1946
Henry and Gladys purchased this farm in 1912 and ended up owning it for over thirty
years. A 1915 map at the Carnegie Branch Library for Local History shows that the
property was now about half of the size of the property owned by Rand.
Henry Showalter was born in 1877 in Virginia. According to his 1918 World War I draft
registration, he identified himself as being a farmer in Broomfield, which is likely still a
reference to the location of this property because of its proximity to Broomfield and
because Louisville did not yet include this area within its incorporated area. Gladys was
born in about 1880 in Ohio.
Directories and census records show that Henry Showalter was a bricklayer, then a brick
contractor. The facts that the farm was purchased by the Showalters in 1912, County
sources say that the house was built in the years not long after 1912, the house is of
brick construction, and Showalter was a bricklayer combine to present the strong
possibility that Showalter constructed the house himself.
As with the George and Lucinda Rand family, the Showalters appear to have had
another residence in addition to 10101 Dillon. For example, census records for 1920 and
1940 place the Showalters at this location at 10101 Dillon, but the 1930 census and
Denver directories show that they also had a northwest Denver address, which was
4236 Irving, located about 15 miles from 10101 Dillon. It was supposedly constructed in
1925. A quick look at images of 4236 Irving online showed a house that, though
constructed in a different style from 10101 Dillon, is similar to 10101 Dillon in its usage
of two contrasting colors of brick.
Heeney Ownership and Brethower Ownership, 1946-1953
In 1946, Paul and Margaret Heeney purchased this farm property from Gladys
Showalter. It is believed that they then sold a portion of the property to another party,
making the farm again smaller.
Paul Heeney was born in Colorado in 1894. Margaret Heeney was born in Colorado in
about 1892. Prior to their purchase of 10101 Dillon, they had farmed elsewhere.
3
