Architectural style/building type:
701 Jefferson: Other style: Wood frame cross gable
705 Jefferson: Other style: Wood frame front gable
627 Pine: Other style: Wood frame side gable
23. Landscaping or special setting features: Jefferson Place Subdivision is a historic residential neighborhood
adjacent to downtown Louisville. The subdivision is laid out on a standard urban grid of narrow, deep lots with
rear alleys. Houses are built to a fairly consistent setback line along the streets with small front lawns, deep
rear yards and mature landscaping. Small, carefully maintained single-family residences predominate. Most of
the houses are wood framed, one or one and one-half stories in height, featuring white or light-colored
horizontal wood or steel siding, gabled or hipped asphalt shingled roofs and front porches. While many of the
houses have been modified over the years, most of the historic character -defining features have been
preserved. 701/705 Jefferson Avenue is consistent with these patterns and blends well with the scale and
character of the neighborhood.
This large site comprises 5 lots, with two main houses facing Jefferson Avenue (701 and 705 Jefferson), one
secondary residence facing Pine Street (627 Pine), a large garage behind 705 and a small shed behind 705.
701 and 705 have small, open grassy front yards along Jefferson. 627 is set close to the west alley, with a
partial concrete drive from Pine Street leading towards the house, suggesting a previous garage location. 627
faces east into the shared property. The open, grassy yards for the three houses are not separated.
Landscaping is minimal, although there are two trees in front of 701. The only fence on the site, a chain link
fence, defines the northern property line.
24. Associated buildings, features, or objects: There is a large garage at the northwest end of the site behind 705
Jefferson. The garage has white horizontal lap composition siding, with dark brown painted plywood siding on
the gables. The foundation is concrete. There is no roofing, only exposed plywood decking. A white metal
overhead garage door is located on the west side and a solid wood man -door faces south. The east elevation
has three 8/8 divided light double hung wood sash windows. There is a storage shed between 705 and the
garage, in the middle of the property. The shed is built on skids. It has a gambrel roof with tan asphalt shingles
and brown wood panel siding.
IV. ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY
25. Construction history (include description and dates of major additions, alterations, or demolitions):
Early records of this property are unclear, but 701 Jefferson appears to have been built by 1881 and 705
Jefferson was built by 1900. 627 Pine may have been built in 1966. 701 Jefferson: a small west addition was
constructed in 1969. In 1976, the west addition was enlarged, a garage at the southwest corner of the property
was demolished, a shed at the north end of the property was removed, and the garage at the northwest corner
of the property was added. 627 Pine, which was identified as a "shop", was on the site by 1976. Siding on 701
Jefferson was replaced in 2001. The east screened porch was enclosed after 1948. 705 Jefferson: windows
have been modified, siding has been replaced and the east porch roof modified, since 1948. The south
addition pre -dates 1948.
3
