General Architectural Description <br />This building is comprised of two main sections - a two-story stuccoed <br />brick masonry (or possibly wood frame) building to the north, with a <br />square plan, and a stuccoed wood frame portion to the south, with a <br />rectangular plan. Together, the two sections come together to create an <br />L-shaped building. <br />The two-story portion has a stone foundation, with concrete pargeting, and <br />a hipped roof, with asphalt shingles and exposed rafter ends. One red <br />brick chimney is located on the interior of the east elevation. Window <br />patterns on the entire building include: 6/1 double -hung sash (ribbon <br />style), flanked by 6-light hoppers; single -light fixed -panes; 3-light fixed - <br />panes; 3/1 double -hung sash (ribbon style); 6/1 double -hung sash (ribbon <br />style); and 8-light fixed panes. Many of these windows are not historic, <br />and have painted black or white wood frames and surrounds. The main <br />entry door on the facade (west elevation), is glass -in -wood -frame, which <br />opens onto a concrete porch, with a gabled hood supported by Doric <br />columns. This entrance presently provides access to Cutting Edge <br />Communications. Another glass -in -wood -frame door opens onto a small <br />wood porch, located on the north elevation. On the east elevation, yet <br />another glass -in -wood -frame door opens onto a handicapped ramp. (All <br />of these doors and porches are not historic.) <br />The portion of the building to the south, features a front gabled plan, <br />which is one story tall at the front (west) end, and two stories tall at the <br />rear. A pseudo Classical Revival style facade has been put on the front <br />end of the building, on the west elevation. Paired glass -in -wood -frame <br />entry doors here, with flanking sidelights, provide entry into Main Street <br />Mortgage LLC. <br />A large Garage / Workshop is located on the alley, at the east end of the <br />lot. This building abuts to, and is part of the same construction, as the <br />garage next door at 836 Main Street. The garage / workshop has a <br />concrete slab foundation and floor, and red glazed brick walls, covered <br />with concrete pargeting. The roof is flat, with stepped side gables along <br />the north and west elevations. The roof is covered with corrugated metal <br />over lx wood decking and 2x wood rafters. Two painted white wood - <br />paneled roll -away garage doors, open toward Walnut Street on the north <br />elevation. Two metal overhead garage doors are located at the south end <br />of the west elevation. <br />is <br />29.Construction History (include description and dates of major additions, <br />alterations, or demolitions: <br />Sanborn insurance maps show that this lot was first built on prior to 1893. The <br />1893 and 1900 Sanborn maps both depict a dwelling here, which fronted directly <br />onto Main Street. By 1908, this building had been razed. The 1908 Sanborn map <br />depicts the north end of the extant building (the square hipped -roof portion), and <br />lists its use as a dwelling. Also depicted on the 1908 Sanborn, is the east end of <br />the south part of the extant building. This building's use is labeled "Bake Oven." <br />In 1908, these two buildings were two separate structures, which had not yet been <br />joined together. Finally, one other small building is depicted on this lot on the <br />1908 Sanborn map. This building, labeled "Bakery" fronted directly onto Main <br />Street at the southwest corner of the lot. By the 1940s, it had been razed. Boulder <br />County Assessor records suggest that the modern alterations to the extant building <br />were carried out in 1975. <br />23.
