Architectural style/building type: Gabled ell
23. Landscaping or special setting features: Landscape or special setting description: Jefferson Place Subdivision
is a historic residential neighborhood adjacent to downtown Louisville. The subdivision is laid out on a standard
urban grid of narrow, deep lots with rear alleys. Houses are built to a fairly consistent setback line along the
streets with small front lawns, deep rear yards and mature landscaping. Small, carefully maintained single-
family residences predominate. Most of the houses are wood framed, one or one and one-half stories in height,
featuring white or light-colored horizontal wood or steel siding, gabled or hipped asphalt shingled roofs and front
porches. While many of the houses have been modified over the years, most of the historic character -defining
features have been preserved.
624 Pine Street is consistent with these patterns and blends well with the scale and character of the
neighborhood, but differs in some respects from others in the area. It is located on a large three -lot property.
Unlike most of the properties in Jefferson Place, the front yard is fenced, with a white wood picket fence. A tall,
1-1/2 story secondary residence or garden house is located in the southeast corner of the property. A
detached garage is set very close to the alley along the west property line, with a driveway that opens north to
Pine Street. The house has grassy yards on both sides and on the front. The back yard is enclosed with a 6
foot wood privacy fence and could not be clearly observed.
24. Associated buildings, features, or objects: There is a tall garage with a loft along the west property line adjacent
to the alley. The garage opens north to Pine. Exterior siding matches the house, with narrow horizontal wood
clapboard siding with a rounded profile. The siding is painted light sage green and trim is painted white. The
garage has a steep gable roof with tan asphalt shingles and two operable flat skylights on the south slope.
There is a closed loft opening on the north side with an exterior loft beam and hoist. These are non -historic.
There is a large weather vane on the ridge that is also fairly new. Garage doors on the north side consist of
three panels: one bifold and one swinging leaf. The doors are constructed of horizontal wood siding with three
upper lights in each panel.
Immediately south of the garage along the west alley, there is a storage building that is not readily visible due to
the privacy fences. It has a gable roof with asphalt shingles and a red brick exterior chimney on the north side.
There are two attached sections to the building. The southern section is set about a foot east of the northern
section. Siding matches the house, except for the east wall of the northern section, which is stucco painted
green. On the south side of the southern section there is a 3/2 window and a door leading to a covered patio.
Further details were not visible.
In the southeast corner of the property is a tall, narrow 1-1/2 story wood framed building that may be a
secondary residence or a garden house. Exterior siding and roofing match the house. Gable siding is fish
scale profile. The roof is a steep front gable with gable dormers on the east and west. Dormers contain 3/1
wood sash windows. The main facade faces north to the private back yard. The entrance has a panel door
2
